Longer-Scale Baritone strings?

Post by skullservant »

Hey dudes!

So I recently put my 28 5/8" baritone neck onto my Jazzmaster body.
I went to string it up with Ernie Ball's Baritone strings, but I found that although the EAD strings were long enough, the GBE strings that came in the pack were not long enough considering the Jazzmaster's trem.
Not exactly sure why I'm having problems now, because I had the same scale neck on my VM Jazzmaster without any problems.

Just wondering if there are any (relatively cheap, or cheap) sets of longer scale baritone strings that I might be able to try out?

Thanks!

LaBella will make whatever scale length you're after for a very reasonable price. I use a custom set on my Bass VI (110-84-62-46-36-25) and it runs around $20.

Ah! That's not so bad. I'll definitely have to check those out. I really need to take some measurements tonight and see how long the strings actually need to be to reach from the trem to the headstock, it's a bit nuts in terms of length haha

Yeah, LaBella prices are really fair considering how many gauges they offer. They're nice strings too, good feel, sound great, long life. Custom order turnaround is fast, 7-10 days. I'll link the custom order page, you can at least see the gauge selection and prices. They ask you to enter what guitar they'll be going on when you order to ensure strings will fit so I'd just shoot an email sometime after you measure and make sure it's not an issue.

That's great! I was looking at Circle K earlier today but this looks a lot more flexible. I'll have to definitely get everything measured and check the gauges on everything to see if I want to go around the EB's gauge or a little lighter/heavier here and there. Seems great that they ask you what you're putting them on to make sure it will work, I hate guessing when I buy strings sometimes

Agreed. Baritone and short scale bass strings are the hardest when it comes to guessing too esp when a Jazzy trem is involved.

Ugh yes. I had this neck originally on my Telemaster body and the EB's worked fine, but then you've gotta add like 3-5 inches for the Jazzy trem and its like UGH but SOOO WORTH IT

I would love Circle K so hard if they started making shorter strings.
It's difficult to get gigantic BassVI strings without having to rig stuff up. I had to turn mine into string-through and they're still too long, so the only thing keeping my lowest string from unwinding is hope.

Yeah, I feel you on that. When I bought new strings for the Kramer 450b when I had it, I ended up having to go through 3 sets of strings to find the right freaking scale length because it was in the middle of two different scales it seemed. Irritating

I've been there too. Bass and baritone sets are so pricey that it really sucks guessing wrong.

Could always just see how Fender's Bass VI set would work out for ya.

The Fender set is really unbalanced with a tight high end and a floppy sloppy low end. They're also very expensive and discontinued, pretty much impossible to find. Not sure where they're sourcing the Squier VI sets.

LaBella, Circke K, and D'addario all make standard VI sets tho. There may be others now days I don't know about.

Figured out the other night that the high E string makes it a 40" scale. So at least I know that now. Going to order some strings within the next few weeks, I'll keep you guys posted!
