ILF, My Intentions Are Bass

Post by Twangasaurus »

I have come to the conclusion that I am a bass person in a guitarists... person. Therefore I have made the decision that bass is my intention. I am looking for bass things that are not moneyful but are also nice, I know not about bass. You are the helpfulest so lets go! YEAH!

Well what kind of sonics are you going for?

Throw up some youtube vids for some tasty bass sounds--that'll help narrow the search.

I felt the same way and grabbed an Xaviere p-bass for like 200 bucks. It sounds and plays really well right out of the box, I barely needed to set it up, it ust had a hair too much relief.

MUSTANG BASS

really simple, good-sounding, comfortable to play for anyone more used to playing guitar.

Unfortunately I feel like what I would be going for is fairly disparate. Essentially post hardcore stuffs (a lot of which you guys helped me find so thanks), Dancey stuffs including everything from Acid Jazz to Dance Punk and I will probably end up playing some stoner rockish stuff as well.

I was thinking one of those P+J bass hybrid thingos that people do these days but I'm really not sure what I'm looking for.

I also don't know how much guitar tastes = bass tastes between brands but I like g&l and reverend stuff? Not too keen on fender to be honest.

There's a few guys here and on TalkBass who swear by the G&L 2000. I know Bigchiefbc has one and loves it.

You should come into General and post in the TB Kittens thread. Those bros know what's up.

I really really dig my Stingray, but for many it may be way too modern sounding. They're also expensive.

A G&L L2000 is a great bet for practically anything though. Good shit. Used they aren't too bad either. 6-800?

Yeah, an L-2000 is a fantastic bass, and if you go with the Tribute model, they're pretty affordable. I paid a little over 600 for a new L-2500 (the 5-string version), you could probably find a used one in the 3-400 range. It's got an insanely wide range of tones, so it's ok if you want really disparate tones. Once you get a hang for how different knob/switch combos sound, you can make really wild changes in tone in a second or two.

Awesome, thanks guys. The L2000 definitely appeals to me.

What do you think regarding amps though? Doesn't need to be a practice amp, I have a little g-dec for that. Something with enough wattage to jam and that can be bought new, the used gear market is total crap in my city.

Solid state or tubed?

Solid state I completely recommend Gallien Krueger. At least 300 watts too. Getting steamrolled by everyone since you have a 100-200 watt solid state amp is frustrating as hell. For a deeper tone a 15 would work, but 10's are the place to go for clarity.

Ahh to be honest I don't know enough about how solid state or tube amps are used on bass and for what sounds/genres.
