Hey Kyle, I'm a 4-track noob. My recordings usually sound like a hissy mess. Any advice, websites, anythign you recommend?

Yeah, besides upgrading some of the obvious stuff (better mics/preamps for example) a couple of decent rack mount pieces will go a long way, even with a crappy 4-track. Start with a good graphic eq and a decent compressor and your mixes should improve ten fold.

The best advice though is to treat it like any other recording situation, which means always spend the extra setup time needed to capture the best sound that you can initially so that you're not always trying to clean stuff up later. If you're hearing a hissy mess on the channel before you hit record you can bet your ass that the tape will magnify it.
