B.o.S. builds a .. Rando winter build part 2..

Postby BetterOffShred » Sun Oct 29, 2017 5:13 pm

So.. I'm watching football and wanted to do something with a pedal build. .. I've been tackling all the big box builds I've ever had interest in .. (Sagan delay coming soon) .. and figured I'd get my Schumann PLL clone box marked and then go fire up the drill press.

if only you'd been watching the world series last night instead, you might have finished it in one sitting.

This one will probably take a while. I'm going to try to build a 18v bipolar board and then run a 7812 and a 7912 and "inject" the proper voltages at their locations because I really hate having to use an AC power supply. That's just no good.

I think it's honestly going to be as easy as just removing the 317 and 337 from the layout, and using the ground from the bipolar/12v supply board for the main board. Famous last words.

you can actually just make the circuit run off +9v dc very easily instead? do you have a pcb or are you vero boarding it?

It's supposed to have 12v and -12v. I'm using Alex's layout from tagboard. My plan was to make a bipolar 18v from a 1054 and then regulate it right at 12v + And- with the 79/7812.. there may be an easier way, but there's a ton of room in the box so I figured I'd go with what I know. I'm up for any and all suggestions of course! :)

ya easy is sort of a loaded word haha. do whatever works for you ;)

i just meant it is "easy" to convert the design to only work off +9V. But if you are working of a tagboard layout that is already supplied it is probably a huge hassle to try to make the modifications.

Yeah the pedal itself originally used 337 and 317's to produce -12 and 12 volts with trimmers supplied to the rest of the circuit. Most (all) layouts I've seen (2) include this stuff and require a 12ish VAC power adapter. I'm going to try real hard to use the bipolar pump and regulators to supply this voltage to the "out" strips of the board without using the A.C. I'm not sure it'll work but worst case scenario I throw in the 317 and 337 and spend 20$ on an AC supply.

It grounds just like it's DC so if I use the same ground from the bipolar/12v board it should work. I'll be working on it some tomorrow for sure.

337 317 are just adjustable linear regulators. it converts the ac to dc in the diode rectifier stage, just fyi. You could use 337 317 with your 18 volt supply just as well in lieu of the 7x12 regulators.

what you originally suggest will work afaik.

Yeah but then I'd have to use trimmers to adjust them to 12v.. I may see if I can leave them on the board and supply them from the bipolar 18 daughter board before I throw the 12v regulators at it. The 337/317 and trimmers part of the circuit is all on the layout so it may be just that ... easy

I have regulators for days so worst case is I'm adding another little daughter board with the 12V regulators. Thanks for rapping with me about it. :joy:

Edit: So I've been looking into this more, and I think supplying 18+ and - to the "In" pin of the 317 and 337 respectively, removing the diodes going to the "12VAC IN" row, and then using the ground row as my common ground for the bipolar supply and board, I would be able to dial in the 12V + and - where I need. Now for the big question. I think a 1054 or 1044/7660 can produce a max current of 200 ma or less at 5V no load. I am not sure that's going to be enough to power 6 big chips. In fact it probably wont be.

Thoughts?

I might be right back to using an AC power supply to get enough current for the hungry chips (Which is probably why Schumann used it in the first place?) There's a dude who sells clones out of Italy or something on Reverb and it looks to me like his use a 9V power supply..
https://reverb.com/item/3497660-ftelett ... k-aluminum
clearly states 9V power supply.. I guess It's time to hit the data sheets and add up what those 6 chips are pulling down :hobbes:

imho there is no way it pulls near 200mA.

most of the chips are cmos logic which only consume current when changing state (the reason cmos is so popular). the opamps might eat 10-20mA total? i guess it depends which one you use.

The data sheets will be the best way to confirm but off the top off my head 200mA is gravy

Yeah the 74 has a max of 10ma and the 40106 and 4046 are the same. So yeah I think I'll be good. The lMC660 I didn't look up, but I'm sure it's not 140 .. hehe thanks again for rapping with me about it.

EDIT: LMC660 is 20ma output current typical at 5V it looks like.

I think I'm just going to go for it and see if it works. If it works at all, I probably wont notice what doesn't work anyway

maybe a better solution is to buy something like this

https://www.ebay.com/itm/MC34063A-DC-DC ... SwKM9ZrlTA

and

https://www.ebay.com/itm/MC34063A-3-6V- ... Swy1VZrlQH

then run it into the linear regs to get it very smooth.

strategy: take 9V dc and step up to ~+14 with one 34063 board and ~-14 with the other one setup for inversion. Then smooth out the smps output with the linear regs as you planned. current output ~ 1.5A max iirc.

charge pump converters are usually only good for low currents,

Very Interesting, that would definitely get me there.

yeah I was concerned about the low current capability of the bipolar supply for such a big unit. I'll order those up and get them coming. Good looking out :)
