Flashing LED

So how can I get an led to flash and allow me to controll the rate?
I thought that this wouyld work but the resistor is too large?
any ideas :idk:

find an LFO design, figure out what shape of wave you want for the 'flash" and use the voltage coming out of it to control an LED... can i assume you are going to control an LDR with that?
