i liked him when he was doing the Hoagy Carmichael drunk-in-the-gutter thing. the more recent stuff just strikes me as the poor man's Captain Beefheart.

I go back and forth with him. When I accept that it's all posturing and theater I think it's fun. But sometimes the whole schtick rings insincere to me. Unlike dubs, I like the music he made after he got sober and started collaborating with his wife much better than his Bukowskian 70s stuff.
