Death-Doom!

Postby WeHuntKings » Thu Nov 02, 2017 3:07 am

I just started listening to early Anathema, Tiamat, and My Dying Bride. Would love to hear more death doom out there. I already know and love Thorr’s Hammer, and would love to discover more in that vein.

You gotta remember that a lot of death doom bands did other stuff and went off the rails - often into equally good stuff of course.
First couple of PL albums are good death doom, then they are good gothic rock, then they had a bad run of just meh. Then came Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us. So fucking good. All the albums after that have been decent too.

Mar de Grises were really good - check out Draining the Waterheart
One of the dudes was in Poema Arcanus which is a good fun band too.

Katatonia - early stuff for sure, then they went melancholic. But they haven't released a bad album. Last album was fucking killer. Try Brave Murder Day or The Fall of Hearts.
Novembers Doom are consistently awesome - I really like Bled White, but all their albums are good.
Swallow the Sun are good - their latest relesae was a triple album that didn't necessarily get super good reviews but I dug it a lot.
Gathering's old stuff was pretty death doomy - check out Always.
Morning Beloveth - Formless. You will like this.

Moonspell's breakthrough album, Wolfheart is pretty fantastic but perhaps not quite right. Who cares. It's good.

I also think Ahab have been getting further from funeral doom and more into gothic death doom stuff - check out The Boats of the Glen Carrig.

Also listen to Vallenfyre.
Not much doom in it, nor melody, but everything they have done is a faceripper.

Don't forget Spectral Voice! They're awesome live and the other band they are in (blood incantation) is also really good.

My tastes generally lean more toward the less melodic stuff.

Decomposed - Hope Finally Died

Runemagick - Invocation of Magick

big +1 for Disembowelment

Morgion - Solinari (the album before this is good too) This one is more melodic/gothic. Probably fits in better with the usual suspects.

It's been mentioned already but the newest Mournful Congregation album is probably their best one and a masterpiece of funeral doom.

If you like that style of epic and melodic death/funeral doom then you might also like Un. Played with these dudes a few times and they always rule!
