Based on that first list of artists, I'd also recommend Sturgill Simpson if you're looking for someone contemporary.

I don't know if Willie Nelson is considered corny these days but every guitar player needs to spend some time trying to figure out what's going on with ol' Trigger. I'd recommend his 2010 album Country Music.

This is as close to country as I'm willing to get. No, I do like some oldies too and did get into some 16 HP and Neko Case for a while... thing is, in this small town country is big - one of Norway's best selling c/w bands is from here - yes, the slick, real dumb kind. So that scene is kinda poison to me. But Pygmy Lush rules! Although being where you are I'm sure you know them, BoatRich.

OK, listened to most of the first song and part of a couple others.

That's about as "country" as Amy Winehouse trying to play Jamaican music. (Not very.) :idk:

I came to post Townes Van Zandt and Roscoe Halcomb, left disappointed/glad they'd been posted within the first few comments.
I'm adamant that James Jackson Toth (Wooden Wand) is in that TVZ level of lyricism that we only see every 40 years or so, and that his album, Death Seat is as flawless as an album can be.

In some ways, this thread is kind of like saying "i've been getting into this rock and roll thing, i like chuck berry and motorhead and nirvana and jimi hendrix. what else should i check out?" not to give you too much shit, but country is a huge universe. my first thoughts on "nick cave of country" are kris kristofferson, townes van zandt, and billy joe shaver (avoid the christian stuff with this guy). but there's tons more. i'm assuming you're meaning nick cave's good music and not the bullshit early stuff.

someone said "i don't know if willie nelson is still considered country". if he's not country then nothing is. i realize the genre has largely gone to shit and willie is still good music, so i can kind of understand, but hopefully there will always be some people keeping it real and he's about the best we've got right now.

the kesha comment... dude, are you out of you're mind?

Not country, corny.
I inherited a large collection of Kenny Rogers records. In case anyone's wondering, they're bad.
