Country

I like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Glen Campbell a fucking lot, and I know there's a lot I'm missing out on. Any suggestions? Also just general country talk in general.

Could you narrow it down a little?

"Country" encompasses a pretty wide range of musics.

Yeah I honestly thought about that right after I posted. Honestly not really sure how to? I guess I'm thinking of Western more so? Anything on the folky side of things or Bakersfield sound sort of stuff? I'm just getting bored with heavy stuff.

If there's a Nick Cave of country I'd love to know who that is?

Gotcha!

Yeah, I like most kinds of country that aren't too modern/commercial.

Hank III is nice in that he's a little bit country and more than a little bit rock 'n' roll.

If anyone's the "Nick Cave of Country", it's probably this guy:

Although, I'll try to think of others that may possibly fit that moniker.

Just watch Heartworn Highways..TBH, everything worth seeing is already on youtube. The movie itself is pretty dry and drawn out.

Have you listened to Sturgill Simpson? He's definitely got that old timey vibe

George Jones is one of the greats you missed, Johnny Horton, Marty Robbins...Buck Owens is probably my fav

Most contemporary guys I like are Dwight Yoakam

I got a banjo a little while ago and been checking out stuff in there, JD Crowe, Earl Scruggs, Don Reno, theres this guy named Noam Pikelny who is known for banjo playing but does other stuff, makes good music

I like a lot of Western Swing stuff too, JImmie Rivers, Jimmy Bryant, instrumental country jazz stuff

As far as Nick Cave of country...hmm maybe Lucinda Williams? Drive By Trucker's are alt-country...every song seems to be more depressing than the next...(to an unlistenable degree imo)

Theres lots of dark country stuff, entire genre of songs in it known as murder ballads

I dig Western Swing because it's basically countrified jazz for rednecks:
