Harshest big muff

Postby Bearstripes » Tue Jul 10, 2018 11:56 am

What’s the nastiest, harshest big muff?

I’m looking for super nasty, trebly, buzz saw, etc.

I’ve been thru a hand full

Black Russian- don’t really remember what it sounded like
Little big muff- pretty close and killed on bass but I never liked it on guitar
Pharaoh- sounds not very muffy to me
Way huge Russian- like it on guitar on bass it’s eh. Has a weird mid range hump that I can’t fucking stand (tho this depends on the instrument/pick ups)

So what’s the nastiest? Where do I go?

Was honestly thinking the regular nyc or the swollen pickle?

for "harsh" you're gonna want to look at the late 70s/early 80s IC Muffs. good luck even using one with the gain set higher than 2.

I think the bass big muff is actually amazing coz you can dial up the tone knob (cutting bass and boosting treble - would normally sound pretty thin and small) then the bass boost toggle fills out the lost low-end. dunno if that makes it harshest of the muffs but it's definitely useful in a way others aren't.

also really good - fredric green russian. less gainy and muddy than most muffs

Swollen pickle has enough pots, both internal and external, that have a ton of range to let you reallly tweak out some harsh sounds. You can get a lot more variety out of a swollen pickle than the nyc.

It seems to me that if extreme harshness is your thing, there's easier ways to get there than a big muff. Although there's a muff for everyone these days with so many variants.

Run a kill kill filter after any fuzz.
In terms of big muff i would think any elk variant or the fuzz war would do

This is 3/4 of a fuzz war and a filter. I love it

IC muffs are also good as, as are rats and muffs combined.

The haunting mids (the one before jhs) is also a good choice. Have someone build you one.
