I like him and what he is doing, but I have the same issue with him as every other builder of vintagy stuff which is it sure would be nice to have a 5 string or real 6 string bass made in a vintagy manner with vintagy pickups and shit, there are enough 4 string basses in the world already...

Haha that's fair, although I'm solidly a 4 string person. There are waaaaaaay too many basses that offer nothing different and the choice for 5+ strings/fretless is terrible.

Bobby is cool though and AFAIK he makes all or most of his own hardware (certainly the bridge on mine is a homebrew creation and a good one) so he might be able to hook you up?

Makes like Walrus Audio and Solid Gold Fx don't seem too popular around here. How come? Do they have some slimey background story like JHS, or do they just not appeal to the ILF crowd?

Not to discount your question, but in starting this thread I was thinking of gear manufacturers much less talked about (and not just here) than Walrus and Solid Gold.

I think I could probably write 1000 pages on branding and stuff like that. I think there are people here that have (and like) Walrus and Solid Gold pedals. Dude from Solid Gold has an account here. :idk: Maybe they're looked at as being "too mainstream"? Are they interesting? Do they do interesting things? Make interesting sounds?

I'm sure there are tons of mainstream pedals that I'd like. I don't really care about stuff like that. It's a matter of being attracted to it in the first place. Why are you attracted to what you're attracted to? I think it says more about a person than they may like to admit. Maybe? :idk: It's not that some of those pedals don't appeal to me, it just might be that there are other pedals that appeal to me more. Why? Why? Why don't you wanna talk about it? :snax:

Okay, got your point, I just saw brands like Big Ear and Ensoniq mentioned so I figured I'd ask about those two brands, cause they really aren't talked about much around here. Branding is surely not the issue at hand, since this is probably the place with the most "underground" brands.
I'm attracted to these brands cause they make what seem to be solid (I haven't used em), sorta classic stuff. I don't know if the last question is a real question towards me, or more like you going off on a train of thought, but I'd love to chat about stuff like that.
I guess you answered my question though, in that these brands probably just don't appeal to the common ILF'er.

Naw, it's not a bad question. There're no bad questions. (Only bad answers. :D )

I think branding has a lot to do with what you asked about though.

For pedals of utility, I think people around here do tend to prefer certain ILF-approved standbys.

 Yeah, that last question wasn't directed at you. I was just going off on a tangent.

I'll talk about almost anything you want. :idk:

Also, actualidiot, if you watch this video, I think this'll explain a lot:

I guess that, as evident by the current topic in the modular thread, looks has a lot to do with it? Like, the looks of certain Walrus and SGFX pedals definitely appeal to a certain type of buyer, but like other than that, Walrus has the Jupiter which is imo a pretty rad gated fuzz and SGFX has the Sasori which is a FY-2. Both types are pretty sought after around here. :idk: SGFX offer sequenced filter and (dare I say it) phaser, which is pretty interesting if you ask me.
Though, on second thought, Julia and Deep Six get mentioned every now and then.

About them being mainstream. I know that my tastes might be a bit more mainstream than most people's here, but I don't think that's why these brands don't get as much recognition, when brands like Moog and Boss do.

Not gonna lie. If there're two pedals that both sound pretty good, I'd most likely take the one that looks better. :idk:

If one definitely sounds way better than the other, the choice is clearer. I think many people probably think along the same lines.

I do see Walrus mentioned here and like I said, Solid Gold has some presence here as well. IIRC, they did a tourbox a few years back.

Moog and Boss are well established mainstream brands. I don't think you can really compare them to mainstream pedal companies that are just starting up.

I'm the same way, though cheap seems to be the new deciding factor.

That's a good point, but I'll raise you Source Audio and Earthquaker. (not really though, let''s just end this here)

That Source Audio stuff isn't winning any beauty contests. Although, they have gotten *slightly* better looking.

These still look pretty boring and generic:

They may be really functional, but I'd venture to say that aesthetics adds a lot of value to a pedal (all else being equal).

I think this sold in less than 5 minutes yesterday:

Those SA's look alright I guess, but they kinda give me associations to cheap and bad chinese digital effects.

Seppuku is a "cool" brand and that particular pedal has just the right amount of "weird" and slight kitsch going on, which I guess is popular atm.
I used to have a sweatshirt with that pattern btw, in PURRPLLE

I don't really know too much about them. :idk:

Their instagram looks good: https://www.instagram.com/blastcult/?hl=en

I know they build upright basses. So, I'd guess they're popular with the rockabilly crowd.

Apparently, before they were Blast Cult, they used to be King Doublebass. Here's an interview with dude: http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2011/09/22 ... last-cult/

There's a King Doublebass fretless electric bass guitar up on Reverb now:

How do we know what people aren't talking about if they don't talk about it? LOL.

On the real though, I do agree with the terminology ILF approved. God this shit drives me fucking bonkers. I don't buy anything anymore based on ILF hype. I'm sorry but you guys just going off on stuff all the time that I barely am interested in, which is fucking cool! I'm glad for that. Most of my interests stem from what I'm musically trying to achieve now. I used to just buy everything that made weird noises, but am becoming more refined.
