post weird instruments/sound devices

I love reading/listening to stuff like ondes martenot and early electronic instruments, gear used in early sci-fi movie scores, also love learning/listening about weird more recently made DIY stuff or just esoteric gear

Heres some stuff I found looking at DIY plate reverbs

I really wish I remembered what the weird instrument they were hiding in the Il Corral in LA 10 years ago...thing took up an entire room and it was like one of three made or something. I've looked for it in the past, but never found the article again (should of just asked when we played there before they shut down...short lived venue I think off of Melrose).

The 120 Years site catalogs all kinds of pioneering keyboards and audio generators along with historical pics and sketches. If you're into devices like the rhythmicon (1930), klaviatursphäraphon (1928), and the Clavecin Électrique (1759), jump right in.

Here's a nice quote from one of the inventors/composers.

“The music of the future will be attained by radio instruments! Of course, not with radio transmission, but rather direct generation of musical tones by means of cathode instruments! […] Indeed, the cathode-music will be far superior to previous music, in that it can generate a much finer, more highly developed, richly coloured music than all our known musical instruments! ”
Jörg Mager: ” Eine Neue Epoch Der Music Durch radio” (Berlin 1924)

I really, really, really love Ciat-Lonbarde stuff. The only draw about them is just how insanely expensive they are. Maybe one day I'll own a DEARcocoDEER, but spending $2k for these is pretty crazy even though they're incredibly intricate designs.

I've wanted a Cidrax ($750), since I first saw this video. One day...

I'm a big Raymond Scott fan (and I imagine the OP is already familiar with him). Somewhere I have a floppy disk stuffed full of dozens of links about the most gorgeously weird musical creations of the 20th century. Hopefully I'll find it one day and track down all those archivists. Hopefully all of those Geocities and Angelfire galleries have been relocated to Tumblr.

Love some Bruce Haack, too. What a kook (the good kind).

Too many people sleep on stuff like musique concrète, along with figures like Daphne Oram.

I guess if we're talking weird devices, it doesn't get weirder than stem cell research making a human neural network that improvises with musicians. I just found out about this, and it is the COOLEST FUCKING THING.

Remember that time that guy turned a cave into the world's largest lithopone? That was pretty great.

I couldn't find a lot of information about how this stuff was created in terms of specific devices, it mentions a lot about tape loops in stuff written about them.
