I think Hordjik has a frequency shifter too. Todd Barton has been messing around with it a lot. (There is a link to an Instagram post up there too). Could be some other 4u make but I think Barton said it was Horjik :idk:

Linear frequency shifting / single sideband modulation is awesome and quite easy to do digitally as you don't need to do all the component matching for the dome filter. Here's a bit of code that spinsemi offers for free that does the dome filtering and multiplication + summing/subtraction for isolating the sidebands. Just skimmed the last page so probably mentioned already, but IIRC the math is:

[Carrier (at 0 degree shift) * sinus modulator] + [Carrier (at 90 degree shift) * cosine modulator] = upper sideband

[Carrier (at 0 degree shift) * sinus modulator] - [Carrier (at 90 degree shift) * cosine modulator] = lower sideband

Yeah, digitally. Like ring modulation, it's easier.

I think some of this is just the exotic challenge of the analog realm. There ain't many analog frequency shifters. There are some digital ones out there though (koma, synthesis tech, Alexander, Sputnik, probably some in those eurorack multifx). Analog, just the buchla and analog systems currently in production...Sputnik never released their licenced version of the Haible (nor has synthcube who owns the production rights at the moment since his passing).

And Joel from Chase bliss read my off handed comment about what a chase bliss ring mod would be...and it would be a frequency shifter haha.

Just havin' fun and ramblin'. Ain't nothin' serious.

Ha, I keep waiting for Audio Damage to come out with their digital frequency shifter in pedal form.

Never gonna happen?

I think they've "shifted" their focus to plugins only? :idk:

Yeah, I was looking for the Spectre the other day and noticed all their hardware is gone from the site and no body has 'em in stock. Don't know what happened...they were going hard at it for a while in eroraxk with a huge sampler.

I wasnt gonna buy anything, was just trying to remember how they did their tracking (it was like sample and then CV control over one octave). Don't really remember why I was looking though. Haha

Glad to have ya aboard Pladask. Gotta have more people talking about the balanced modulation.

I actually don't think we've ever actually posted any of the equations around here. :thumb:

I probably would've bought an Audio Damage digital frequency shifter in pedal form. :idk: :snax:

Sure I posted these way back in the thread somewhere, but for reference:

been all the rage here with the recent acquisition of an eq ..with a frequency knob that was unexpected, it has a resolution knob next to a 1/2 switch...totally pairing with a ring mod tonight.

Should get my space ring out someday. Kinda want to try the digi2it version too.

I should've tried those audio damage pedals at NAMM...that was like 3 years ago...geez. I was like, "oh, they'll be out in a few months" haha. I just hung out with Lee most of the time.

An oscillating fuzz, but since I've included other "ring mod-sounding non-ring modulators" in this thread, why not this one too?

I just got to the part (5:02) where he says "even a pseudo-ring mod tone". :idk:

Anyone tried an Outer Rings? Seems like an interesting pedal and it has a huge range of sounds, I just wonder how useful it is, or if it's too finicky

I hated it. I couldn't find any sounds I liked. On the plus side, they seem like really nice people, so I won't hold it against them.

I'm still planning to buy a Dream Reaper eventually.

echorec, sometimes I doubt your commitment to ring modulation.

It wouldn't be my first choice for a "traditional" sounding ring mod, but it's great at making noise.

If you're looking at it as a useful ring mod, pass. If you're looking at it as a useful noise maker, go right ahead.

It excels at making really harsh, unappetizing noise. Personally I don't know why you'd drop $200-250 on one of these, when you could get similar results by stacking some BOSS distortions.

Like Geezy says, if you want RM, look elsewhere (Dwarfcraft, Fairfield, Moog). You won't find 70s sci-fi or buttery modulation in the Outer Rings. I shipped it back to the dealer immediately.
