Suggestions for a Rat based pedal
I've never owned a rat, or tried a rat based pedal. Gasing for one, so I wanted ILF's awesome opinions.
I want to use it for both bass and guitar for heavy noise rock music: unsane, young widows, jesus lizard, kenmode, etc
Should I start with a Rat 2? Unlike the U.S, it's not that cheap in Canada, and for a little bit more I can find a used boutique version. I'd also prefer one that'll retain as much low end as possible.
What are your suggestions, dear ILF? There are just so many options (Old Rats, Rat Tail, Iron Horse, Soothsayer)

Rat Tail is my top pick. Every time. I wish I still had mine!

I don't have a RAT yet, so I really want a Rat Tail, or as it is known now, the Cat Tail.
Also looking at Abominable's Don't Shred on Me. That one's pretty cheap as well.

Mojo Hand FX Socrates puts a smile on my face. Nothing fancy, just a quality RAT.

Rat King sounds really great with guitar and bass, lots of different tones are possible with clipping options etc. and its great having a low gain/high gain setting only a stomp away...plus the momentary feedback loop is perfect for getting your noise on.

Re: Suggestions for a Rat based pedal
Recently got a modded Rat Tail in a trade. It's fucking glorious. I use it as a nice overdrive, but it's definitely capable of getting crazy and noisy like the bands you mentioned. I like the 2 dials that let you adjust the diode clipping.
I didn't really like the Rat 2 much. The one I tried had some weird noise going on with it. It didn't really sound natural like every other rat I've tried so far. Haven't had that problem with the Rat Tail and a friend of mine has an old rat from 1986 that doesn't have the weird shit that Rat 2 was doing.
I was looking into The Rat reissues before I got offered this trade. They usually go for $100 and sound pretty sick. Turbo Rat is a fine choice as well. I currently have my Rat Tail set to LED clipping like the Turbo Rat.

The Rat King sounds SOOOOOOO good. I can't believe I never played a rat before. I really love the no diodes option, and that all the low end is retained! Now I want to get another Rat for the other board!
Anyone play the dunnO))) deceiver yet, and how it compares with the rat king/tail ? Also contemplating a don't shred on me deluxe...the clean blend option seems so awesome. Or..fuck it, might just find another used Rat Tail

Right now I have a Alchemy Audio modded Rat and I like it quite a bit, but the Rat Tail is supremo.
