Always-recording looper like vintage EHX 16 Second Delays?
Does something like this exist? I've got a Ditto x2 but I've been admiring Nels Cline's ability to just hit a button and start looping what was played before.
(The reissue 16 Second Delays don't do this.)

Re: Always-recording looper like vintage EHX 16 Second Delay
I thought there were 2 modes on the reissues and one of them did this. I saw one on reverb last night and read the manual (I was intrigued by it's Midi) and the way I read it it was on continuous loop record.
The next best thing might be an el cap?
I use to get great sound on sound stuff with v1 echolution on its long setting.

Not sure if it's exactly what you want, but I would say the PDS(and RDS) series could do this. Feedback all the way up is a sound on sound static looper thing. Thing is that it does delay while off as well, so it doesn't start delaying when you activate it, but plays back whatever you played before (if that makes any sense. In a true bypass loop it would start "looping" when you engage the loop though

I think that's how the vintage 16 Second Looper works, it is "recording"/delaying even when bypassed:

Yeah the Digitech PDS-serie delays work similarly as the 16SD. It's always recording samples even when the unit is bypassed. The sample time depends on the setting of the delay time pot. So for example if the delay time is set to 1s and you engage the hold switch, it starts to loop the last 1s sample. If you want to hear the loop, you hit the bypass switch. If you engage the unit on before hitting the hold switch, it works as a normal delay. You can still use it as a sampler, you just hear the last sample as a delay.

That's cool -- I'll look into it. Thanks!
Edit: Just remembered the PDS clips on this rad tumblr that I follow:

Thinking a 1 or 2 second version with mods might be really rad.. I have a Ditto X2 for true looping but the way these old always-recording/sound-on-sound delays work is super rad and could be really useful.
Anyone know if the PDS 2700 (Delay + Chorus) is like the PDS 1002 / 2000 on the delay side? I found one on Reverb that's local to me that I might try to scoop...

This an excellent question. What mods are you think of for the PDSi?

If you want that, just go with the RDS and shell out the bucks for the 7200 or 8000 - 7-8s on tap, not small (rack) but you can run any 1/4" FS to it and control it with your foot.

I thought the Strymon Deco was supposed to the sound on sound/loop thing. Haven't tried one myself.

Re: Always-recording looper like vintage EHX 16 Second Delay
Thing is I've yet to hear something that actually sounds like tape in any regard on the sound on sound mode - even the EHX unit works like a digital thing. It's its' own thing..and works, but it's not the weird oscillation/erase head off thing you can get with tape units, while retaining the actual echo too.
It's the primary reason I keep my Space Echo running still - and the one thing that the RE-20 digital one doesn't do. Otherwise, it's 98% of the actual big box.

Re: Always-recording looper like vintage EHX 16 Second Delay
The DD20 also kinda does it. I'm also searching for something to do this, and it's been a pretty arduous thing. I managed to get pretty close with a super long delay on the DD5 though? Someone in the whatever thread mentioned layering riffs and I got it to work that way but it takes very conscious (for lack of a better word) playing
