Personally, I'm not really crazy about the gain control. It has a very steep taper (so most of the gain is at the end of the sweep).
However, it sounds great if you use your guitar's volume to control the gain.
Also, doing the "cap mod" to the depth control (where you flip two of the caps so that the adjustment is a lot more noticeable) is a really nice way of adjusting the gain, too.

Yeah, they're not even remotely related.
The Black Forest is a Colorsound Overdriver (which is transistor based) while the Boneshaker uses Op-Amps (it's kinda comparable, in design, to a Voodoo Labs overdrive, actually).

Its kind of a mix of a bunch of ideas. Mark asked me to design a schematic what feels like eons ago now for the base design and then he played around with the values ect. Fast forward and here it is. There is a FET gain stage, op amp gain stage, op amp semi-parametric EQ. the block diagram didnt change from the original schematic I drew up. I have seen some of the reversed schematics on FSB ect.

I think some of the issues with the depth may have to do with the cap values used in it rather than its actual electrical function. I never tested the base schematic. I just drafted it up in EagleCAD and ran a few simulations to see the EQ test points and sweep ranges.

The video of Kingman playing his RG852 with a Boneshaker and a delay is pretty delicious. You can really hear how the gain and tone hold up on the low end. I'm sold .. sold AF...

Well I ordered one off Reverb for $45 shipped. My Universe is in drop G right now, so I'm kind of excited to fool around with this thing and see just how good it is at the low end. As I said above, Kingman and his RG852 sounded pretty good down low with it, which is kind of what sold me on the pedal. For $45 shipped you can't go wrong though. I love the tone

I really like it. It took me a few minutes to "tune" it for my RG7620, but the low B sounded thunderous. My Universe is in a case downstairs so I may have to wait till this weekend to spend a little time with it. I really like the way you can boost or cut frequencies with its EQ. It's a great design, and I think the Boneshaker will be finding it's way in front of my Rectifier. What fun!

Nice. I'm curious to hear how you feel it works best with the Rectifier.

I played it all night! I really really dig this thing. My Les Paul has as 500T in the bridge, with the boneshaker about 1:00 for gain, and then the EQ dialed with lots of low mids and no boost to treble.. It's just perfect AC/DC tone haha! The note separation with chords is insane, super clear. It blooms even on my little solid state practice pile I was playing it through, sustain for days.

As for rectifier use.. I have a couple things in mind. I'm thinking about running it as an EQ-able boost through the effects loop on the high gain stuff (kind of like what some guys do with a Tube Screamer) to get my highly downtuned stuff to be a little tighter. I'm also curious about running it directly into channel 2 or 3 set on "Vintage" with medium gain and pushing that end. It's harmonic characteristics are pretty sweet and that combo could really sing.

I guess this thread came up because a member designed the circuit and then people were hip to its price drops around places, so just let me say I'm glad I found this. This is a really fun pedal and every time I plugged it in last night I was inspired by the tones. I was playing weird jazz chords I haven't even thought about in years and loving the separation. It's a great circuit. My hats off to the designer, Very Fun!

Hey so I read that the depth knob had some capacitors soldered incorrectly on the V1 boards and DOD had paid to have that fixed a year ago or so? My depth knob doesn't do much and I popped the back off and it's a V1.. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron, is this something I can fix myself?

To be honest I dont know. Freestompboxes had more info on how to fix that. I had no knowledge of the production layout to be able to tell you if you could change it easily or not. I know its a surface mount component so you have to be comfortable desoldering and resoldering that kind of set of capacitor.

Well balls. I'll look into it but honestly it sounds so good I may just not fuck with it.

Well I read it all and then messed with it. And yeah the depth knob is way more effective with the 7 string bumping a low B.. I actually like how it works. I have no need for another tone knob on this thing, the EQis glorious. This pedal is really fantastic. My girlfriend actually came in and told me that whatever I was playing sounded great... yeah that happened. Having read everyone's thoughts on this I'm curious to see how many people still have one. I'm never selling this pedal, I've forged an instant love with it after a couple nights of riffing that I'll never forget. Thanks for the input guys
