I still don't really like it.

 i actually much prefer transit transit, but i'm pretty sure that's a ridiculously unpopular opinion.

i think ebow + whammy - do a loop
play the loop - replay again but bending the strings to create the dissonance and do another loop

and from there go on

also the filterbank is doing the sample and hold-ish

bump on the thread.

autolux/greg edwards fan boy for years and years. i own/have owned most of his gear with exceptions of the pefftronics and filterbank.

plantlife intro is the dl4 loop with ebow+rand-o-matic. next part is with overdrive (fulldrive/hot cake/lpb 2ube combo) and echo pro set to 160bpm (i think dotted eight note?... it's one of the subdivisions of the echo pro). he hits the lead channel of the vht for the breakdown before the end there and switches to the lo-res delay on the echo pro for the morphed sound (400+bpm to about 143bpm) increasing the mix/delay time/feedback. at the end he mixes the intro recording back in before cutting the volume out.

the big mystery in his rig is his signal path. i've had a ton of conversations with people and still have no clue how it splits. there's some sort of clean signal and i'm still not sure what drive goes to what amp. i think the twin gets only the ehx 2ube or stays clean the entire time. i don't think he stacks the fulldrive and hotcake ever. the fulldrive boost stays off and is set to more of a volume boost as he did with the other hot cake he had on his board before that. if anyone has info on the signal path or more info on his 'sound' let me know. twin is set bass 4.5, mid 3.5, treb 4.5. vht has the mid shift with boost mids/treb and cut bass.

ring mod is set for mix with the boss expression pedal. he has it tuned for Eb (audience #2/CKOS) and er.. another tuning for blanket.

he recently put a POG and XP300 in his rig and took out the 2ube for their latest performance in 2012.

if people want more pictures shoot me a PM - i've got lots.

I hate to do this but:

(Sorry I can't get the embed to work) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tmAjfq7HIs

This is more of a general question, but I know I can find the sound in this song. Once the main descending riff starts:

What kind of delay does Greg use to get the notes he's playing to fade into the high pitched pulsing feedback stuff? I kinda assume it's some sort of digital version of an analog delay and he's using tap tempo... but I don't know.

I feel like I used to get that with my DL-4 but I no long have one. I just like how the thick full descending chords turn into the swirling high tone beeping on the repeats.

It's the Lo-Res setting on the Echo Pro (you can also use the DL4) set to 118 bpm. The beginning of that audio you can hear he switches patches on the echo pro to the "118 bpm" patch which has longer feedback causing that sound. He also has his Moog Ring Mod mix on (which he has after his Echo Pro). I think it's a pretty low res rate and tone set to 1 o'clock but I'm not 100% sure on it.

crappy picture I took back in 2009 at the end of the show (they closed with reappearing)

those are not his knob settings - just the correct bpm (118 quarter note).

Hope that helps!

Cool! I used to have an Echo Pro, but I couldn't get all the MIDI shit figured out so I just stuck with the DL-4, which I don't have anymore either. A long time ago I had a Moog Ring Mod, Echo Pro, DL-4, Whammy, and Vortex just like all of Greg's stuff. Everything I wrote was shit (this was like 2002 or), and I dumped it all and found I could actually write my own really good songs without trying to emulate Autolux so badly.

So everything turned out OK!

While you're here, I've always wondered what that little pedal is on the right with the chickenhead knobs... could never figure that one out.

Thanks for the info!

Pedal on the right is a sustain punch creamy dreamer fuzz. It has a history of controversy. But it's based off the Siamese Dream muff sound so it's very similar to an op amp muff.

Creamy dreamer is a modded black russian muff. Was built before corgan revealed a few years back that his muff was actually an opamp muff.

Probably be alot easier, and definitely cheaper to go the black russian route to cop some of greg's tones. Although I don't think he used a muff alot, but could be wrong.

It's mainly for the fuzzed out parts on turnstile blues, intro to headless sky, angry candy, finders fee and probably more I'm forgetting. I think he's not using it as much in favor of the peach fuzz

Been awhile since I've listened to autolux, may need to dig some out. I've been more into greg the bass player lately.

Still not sure about signal path with the two amps. I think the vht has all wet effects and the twin gets maybe an overdrive and the looper. Anyone have a clue on signal path?
