Greg Edwards' "other guitar at the same time" sound.

Tue Jan 08, 2013 7:59 am

At the beginning of Plantlife (up until about 1:05), there's a sound like a second guitar track, an octave or so higher with some variations in the notes played. Somehow, I don't think it's a pre-recorded loop considering it's a basement session thing, plus the way it compliments his playing sounds far too organic, like it's the original signal all kinds of weirded out.

I've read somewhere that Greg uses a Pefftronics Randomatic or something like that, but I've not found a decent demo to hear what that thing sounds like. Any idea on what the wizardry going on here is?

Watch the beginning... He ebows a note and loops it on the DL4...

It's strange, what he loops on the dl4 seems to change with what he's playing over the top of it..
It could be the rand-o-matic, pity the only youtube demos are done on an electric kazoo and a 3-string sitar
Theres a few shots of his board on google images, but it would be a lot easier to tell what everything is if it weren't painted completely black.

Cool song hey, thanks for sharing

I don't think the DL4 loop is actually changing; I think it's just an aural illusion that makes it sound like it is.
As far as the secondary pitch up notes that are related to the chords he's playing, I'd put my money on the Randomizer or something saved on the JamMan. Also believe he has rack units.

I'm more interested in the break that comes later - 1:40 or something.... how to make your guitar blurry like that when playing octaves... i mean blurry, but not muddy, more like... raunchy and broken, reminds me of NIN stuff and such...

1:40-ish is just fuzz & reverb & him slightly bending chords.

I've asked the same thing so many times. The only thing I can think of is that it's pre-recorded in some sort of sampler.

It is some strange pedals on Eugene's bass I think.

Yeah that would make sense; I do know that they both use random noise generator-type pedals. I'd give my first born child to sit down with the band for 30 minutes, and see their setups.

if you search their boards online, eugene`s using a strange moog type pedal to make it sound like a synth and generate white noise, and i think greg is using a memory boy with the knobs turned almost all the way down to create an almost oscelation style effect, while bending the notes on the suspended chords he`s playing to create a clashing ringing sound to bounce off of the oscelation.
