Those are fun, but will not satisfy in the same way...not really a drum kit, and don't sound like one. Just go in knowing it won't really help you to learn drums (if that's the objective).

i don't really want to learn how to play drums. i just want to record beats to music. i REALLY don't want to sit down and program something like a drum mchine

I picked up an old 28" Slingerland marching bass. It's from the 70s and still had the original Slingerland-branded heads, wrapped in stainless steel, with a badge saying the drum was made just outside Chicago in Niles, Illinois. Boom-y as all hell. It did not include the harness but all of the hardware was still present. I'm going to leave it as a reminder of its heritage.
I stripped off the wrap as I did with my kit and unintentionally took off some of the veneer, even though I went slow and applied heat. I took a risk and used a belt sander to remove all of the top ply, then stained espresso like the rest of my old kit. The match is spot on.
The hoops are wood and had a stainless steel strip of the same wrap that was on the shell. I took that off and sanded both. They're going to get glossy black paint as they were pretty badly chipped. I may also paint a white strip. The shell got satin polyurethane. It's all still drying.
Will post a picture just a soon as I have the kit back together. I feel a little silly having just purchased new heads for my 22" kick as new heads for this will cost $100+. I may sell the 22" now as I just can't think of any scenario where I would prefer that over 28" -- thing sounds like a thunderstorm.

Yeah pricing out 28s is no joke. Don't know how much boom you want, but I liked a super kick II on mine to keep it sorta under control. It could blow out a mix (not in a fun doomy way) real fast without some muffling.

like your kit IM, what mic are you using on your kick?

I think it's a CAD Audio KBM412. I remember I picked it out of a discount bin for $30 or so. It's a dedicated kick mic, so I was happy with it. SM57 for the overhead, and that's that. I used to have a four mic setup, but downsized my interface to two channels, so it didn't make a lot of sense to have that many mics.

i ask because the friend i play music with is looking into using something different for his kick. Have you used any other mics in the past that you have liked too, or has this been your only one?

I've used lots. Haven't spent much time in real studios in the past few years, but I've owned Beta 52s and other mics that escape me now. I like this one just fine, and it's cheap.
Maybe this is a dumb thing to say and someone who knows more can correct me, but I don't get the sense that kick/bass mic construction is as critical as other kinds'. It catches lows, I hear the high-end attack, I can sculpt mids in or out of the track. So I'm happy. I don't understand the need for a high-end kick mic, basically, so yeah. This one works great.

he was using a sm57 out of necessity, and the low end was rolling off a bit and not really doing a whole lot in catching any of the small detail or overall weight of it, despite different positions and such. Once the signal is in a DAW, obviously it can be eqed and worked back into shape a bit with compression and such, but i have been trying to figure out something that might work better without being to expensive for him. Yeah then ditch that thing. Buy an inexpensive dedicated bass mic and spend 10 minutes on EQ shelving in a DAW. Good to go.
