Bass Amp Project - Marlboro Sound Works

Post by Schlatte »

Hello!
So I'm getting this amp... a Marlboro 760A. It's a head now, because somebody cut it off a combo...
Pic of the full combo:

It needs some repair work (and woodwork, that cut looks nasty) and then I plan on using it as a bass amp.
Welp, google wasn't very helpful on that one so I thought maybe one of you fine people know something about this thing?
Apparently it either has 75 or 100 Watts.. or something? Ohm rating?
Anything? Anyone?

Greets!

I had one for a bit that I got in a "buy it all if you want the Bassman" deal of that same era.

Dirt cheap 70s or early 80s SS amp, nothing to write home about, didn't sound great, didn't get real loud.

I think I flipped it and a beater Teisco Jaguar copy for $125 or so for both that came with the Bassman and paid for half of the pile.

That was ten or twelve years ago now though.

If it works for you, it works. Hope you didn't pay much though.

Just found another source that says it has 150W... Does anyone know the specs of that thing?

Any of them I'm seen won't keep up with a basic cheapy Beavey Bandit/Fender 1x12 SS combo.

Bedroom-type amp only IME.

We shall see.. I hope there is some info on the am itself regarding impedance, power rating, etc. I don't need a loud amp. I just need something to run my bass through in my little practice room here. I'm gonna use the head through a homemade cab with a 1x15 and two 10" or 8" speakers. That should push enough air to fill the room with bass :D

Yeah, hope it works for you.

From what I could gather they were store-brand type amps for places that didn't have a Fender/Marshall dealer license back in the day when there weren't tons of budget alternatives and used stuff still cost a ton.

Soooo... little update here guys!
Got the amp in a while ago.. man... that thing must have seen some nasty shit. I kid you not.... there was mouse poop in there... and more spiderwebs than anywhere else.. plus a ton of dead spiders.

But I got it up and running again! :joy: :yay:

Replaced the Fuse and Fuse holder thingy, new Jacks for the inputs and the Speaker outs too. Two caps were bad, replaced those too. The switch and the indicator lamp are both still fully functional, which quite surprised me.

Someone apparently modded this thing before me. There is some sort of DI-Circuit inside between the DEEP input jack and the Amp Circuit itself (maybe for a Bass DI... probably). There was a separate Jack on the back labeled "to mixer/PA". Whoever did it wasn't that good at soldering, so I had to redo a few joints, but the circuit works and I kept the DI-Jack (replaced that one with a new one too) and circuit.

Got some spare time today, so I started re-doing the shell... man.. that thing was beat up. But I got it looking quite nice today. A friend of mine will refinish it next week. He runs a small company that does tolex and other stuff for dashboards and stuff... so he's gonna do it for me.

I'll keep this thread updated on the progress.

Soo... long time no update

Welp, I just finished my military service, so I had some time today and built a new headshell!
The old one was way too beaten up and the cheap plywood was falling apart. So I built a new headshell out of solid wood.

gonna fill all the gaps and sand the whole thing down tomorrow. Then it will get a fresh new tolex cover. YAY for progress  :thumb:
