Algal Bloom V2 Changes? Having Issues

Postby boneslygrifter » Tue Jun 05, 2018 2:35 am

Recently bought what I thought was the same V2 Algal Bloom that I had before (GOAT fuzz, btw, hence having two). But this one is different... Instead of the filter toggle switch, it has a knob. The artwork and enclosure are even more gorgeous, and it has a soft switch. Quiet as a mouse, no hum or buzz.

However... its not very loud. It actually drops my volume pretty noticeably, even when its maxxed out. I used to run it after a SSBS Mini and Fuck, and tried the exact same chain this time. No changes in power supply or anything, cables are all fine, guitar connections and pots are ok... and it acts up if I feed the mini into it, which was my favorite sound with my old one; I even recorded with it. This one gets really spitty and loses all the low end unless I turn the volume down, and then it is barely audible. It doesn't consistently do this, but its almost like it overloads if I feed too much input from my other drives into it. In addition, I don't notice a difference at all with the bias knob in any position. it doesn't even make the "bias" noise like I would expect when I turn it.

I got this from MusicToyz instead of directly from Fuzzhugger. I'm kinda sad to return it, as its gorgeous and does sound fairly good with just the Fuck or on its own, although I feel like it has less gain, volume, and sustain than I remember (I was having to furiously plink away on my solos last night at practice), and the occasional weird messy audio. I'm wondering if I got a returned/modified pedal? I was listening to recordings I did with it and it just doesn't sound the same at all.

Here's a picture of it on my board: https://imgur.com/hUpsASo

Before you got to the part about the bias control, I was thinking it sounded like a problem with the bias part of the circuit. If you get in touch with Thomas directly, he'll take care of you: info@fuzzhugger.com

I believe I worked on this by email last week. It shipped without the Choke Mode manual or lost it at some point in shipping.

Choke mode is a bonus mode, and a bit quirky by nature...but it delivers some great crunch, and of course dying and gated tones.

Basically this: In Choke mode, you'll probably want to crank Gain, Bloom, Starve. Then roll back on one of those knobs at a time until you get the hang of how they operate.
