So how does it work? Can you leave the dirty knob at minimum, and then just use the basic clean volume boost as a clean boost? And then like if you want a little dirt, you just dial the dirt knob up to your desired sound? What I'm asking is if the clean "volume" part of the pedal works without the added gain. I'd love to have a very simple two-in-one.

The Hi Five does what you've described pretty well. Even in its highest gain setting, it doesn't have much dirt. It might not have as much clean boost available as say, a SHO, but it definitely covers more ground.

The clean setting sounds pretty good... seems like there is some slight noise, but maybe that's just because there was a volume increase and there was nothing being played. Otherwise, you mentioned that the GAIN side doesn't really add that much dirt, and that's exactly how I'd like it. I think when you had it at about 10:30, it was getting just what I wanted to hear. Just a bit of overdrive to it.

The bit of noise is mostly Youtube compression shenanigans, mixed with my less-than-ideal recording method. In person, the pedal operates extremely quiet.

p.s. I play a Gibson double-cutaway with P-90s, so your demo was right up my ass. I forget if my model is a Special or a Junior or a what. I think it's a Special. TV Yellow. Awesome.

I definitely dig the range of sounds available from the Singing Tree. That threshold knob is really the cat's meow. I've often thought about getting a second Tree just to have two set up differently! It does everything from a nice light breakup to a chunky gritty drive.

I ALSO thought that the slight undercurrent of fuzz on full chords was a little weird... I think it reminds me of my old Epiphone Casino that, when played acoustically, would buzz in a way that was very similar to the Singing Tree... like you would hear the clean acoustic chord, and then underneath would be this absurd fuzzy sustain created by the cheap wood and parts rattling on the inside. I think there was something loose in the bridge pickup, too. We'll see if I can get used to it.

Sometimes that happens to me when I'm playing through my tube amp set too quiet. By quiet I mean not pushed to the adequate volume, thus choking out the preamp. So pedals, especially the Singing Tree for whatever reason, can sounds kind of lifeless/muddy/justplainbad.

At any rate, the Singing Tree and Hi Five are both spectacular pedals!

I have one of the old ones with four knobs and a wood grain finish from before Mellowtone was Mellowtone (It was just called the Singing Tree FX overdrive, I think). Mine's a very dark overdrive that doesn't have a ton of gain, but has a really unique texture that's hard to describe.
